Procedures for Registration as a Radiation Worker

In the University of Tokyo (UTokyo), procedures for registration as a Radiation Worker uses an online system, “UTokyo Radiation Management System” (UTRadMS).

If you plan to start working with radiation and/or radioisotopes (RIs), you need to be registered and authorized as a qualified Radiation Worker in accordance with legal requirements.

Those who belong to the School of Science (SoS), UTokyo are requested to be registered and authorized at SoS, UTokyo, even if they are to be engaged in experiments at accelerator or synchrotron radiation facilities outside of UTokyo.

You need to undergo a health checkup including blood test and attend the “SoS Radiation Course” (90-min Zoom session), in addition to the “UTokyo Radiation Course” (6-hour e-learning course).

  • If your registration category is “X-AB” meaning you are a user of only X-ray devices of category A or B, you only need to attend the “SoS Radiation Course” once in the first year and not any longer in the following years.
  • If you have already worked before as a Radiation Worker in the University of Tokyo, or in another university or institute, you will be exempted from the “UTokyo Radiation Course” by submitting necessary certificates.

Flow of Procedures

A precondition for applying for the registration is that you have your UTokyo Common ID (10 digits). If you do not have it, you need to consult the department office.

1) Application for Registration

First of all, talk with the staff in your laboratory and then apply for registration on UTRadMS after having obtained consent from the Laboratory Radiation Manager in your laboratory.

[Notice] About the registration of e-mail address

Multiple problems of not receiving notifications have occurred for users with Gmail (@gmail.com) addresses registered. We advise you to register your on-campus e-mail address (@g.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp).

2) Health Checkup

After approval of the application, you will receive an e-mail notification from UTRadMS. Following the notification, you should go through the process on UTRadMS for the health checkup.

Answer a questionnaire on the web, and you will receive an e-mail notification. Follow the notification and make an appointment for a health checkup.

(“X-AB” users are exempted from a health checkup.)

3) UTokyo Radiation Course

Apply for the “UTokyo Radiation Course” (e-learning) on UTRadMS.

(Former Radiation Workers should submit necessary certificates as an alternative.)

4) SoS Radiation Course

You need to take the “SoS (School of Science) Radiation Course” in School of Science. See the section of “Radiation Course”.

Note that the order of procedures 2 through 4 does not matter.

5) Application for Authorization

Registration as a Radiation Worker is not automatic. After you have finished necessary courses and health checkup (exemption for “X-AB” users), you should inform the Laboratory Radiation Manager in your laboratory and he/she will ask the Radiation Management Office for authorization.

6) Authorization

If all the conditions are met, you will be registered as a qualified Radiation Worker by the Radiation Management Office.

(Note that the approval procedure may take some days.)

7) Issue of a Luminess Badge Dosimeter

Luminess Badge (personal dosimeter) will be issued. (Except for “X-AB” users.)

8) Instruction and Permission to Use the X-Ray Device

Users of an X-ray device need to receive instructions on how to use the device from the person in charge of the device, and have to obtain permission to use it.

Notes: Be aware that the whole procedure can take more than a month or even a few months. You should make your plan well in advance before you can start your experiment as a Radiation Worker.

Termination of Radiation Work

If you no longer need to work with radiation or radioisotopes (RIs), you can terminate your qualification as a Radiation Worker. If you leave the School of Science (SoS), the University of Tokyo (UTokyo), you need to have your qualification terminated before you lose your status as a member of SoS, UTokyo.

Ask the Laboratory Radiation Manager in your laboratory to submit a necessary document to us the Radiation Management Office to terminate your qualification. Do not apply for termination on UTRadMS yourself, because that is not compatible with the procedure flow of radiation management in the School of Science (SoS).
